Alphonsus Amer, Jr.

Obituary of Alphonsus Amer, Jr.

Alphonsus J. Amer (“Al”), 88, a lifelong resident of Akron, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2018 in his wintertime home community of North Hutchinson Island, FL.  Al arrived in this world on March 4, 1929, the fifth of six children born to Alphonsus J. Amer, Sr and Helen (Young) Amer. He graduated from Saint Vincent–Saint Mary High School, where he met his lifelong sweetheart Mary Ellen Delagrange. After attending John Carroll University, Al married Mary Ellen in 1948. Shortly thereafter, he bought the service station at Market Street and Merriman Road where he would work for the next 60 years, building an Akron institution and a loyal following of customers. Amer’s West Hill Marathon continues to this day under the ownership of Al’s son Jim. Al worked tirelessly throughout his life, but his first priority was his family.

He is survived by Mary Ellen, his beloved wife of 69 years, as well as their ten children Thomas (and Liz McGoldrick), Jerry (Lindey), Lynn Mulqueen (George), James (Karen), Mark (Barbara), Beth MacWright (Jeffrey), Timothy (and Carla Young), Mary Ellen Granzier (Paul), Emilie Gannon (Iggy), and Christine Mayer. Al leaves behind twenty-two grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom love him dearly. He is survived by his brother Louis, and he was preceded in death by his brother Thomas, and his sisters Helen Seib, Mary Jo Brownfield, and Barbara Walter. Al leaves behind dozens of nieces and nephews, many of whom recall learning how to water ski or fish from Uncle Al. An army of friends, some who have already passed and many who remain, consider themselves lucky to have known him. Al was known for his sense of humor, his easy smile, his generous spirit, and his love of life.

He was a lifelong parishioner of Saint Vincent Church where he was baptized; his return to his Heavenly Father will be celebrated in a mass of Christian burial at Saint Vincent at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6. Friends may call at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 East Exchange in Akron from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5.  In lieu of sending flowers, you may make a memorial contribution in Al’s name to Saint Vincent Church, 164 West Market Street, Akron, OH 44303 or to the Saint Vincent de Paul Auxiliary Food Ministry, one of Al’s favorite places to volunteer his time.
